REGIONAL NEWS: IWA Expands its Global Presence

Regional Boundaries of IWA

The Association is organized in a three tier structure which are international, regional, and chapter levels. Regional boundaries are to be established primarily on the bases of governmental influences and geographic boundaries. Several other inherent characteristics are considered when determining boundaries including time, cultural, language, and political differences.

Regional Goals and Objectives

A Region's goals will concentrate on establishing greater communication between members and developing a virtual chapter network.

New Regions Announced

We are proud to announce the appointment of the following regional chairpersons:

IWA France:
Jeremie Berrebi, Webmaster-Web Director of Push Contact, will be overseeing the developments of IWA France. Before the founding of PushContact, Mr. Berrebi 's prior experiences gained him popularity within France's Web community as an editor for ZD Net-France and a systems operator for the CompuServe network. IWA France is preparing to launch the Paris chapter web site and begin implementing its membership campaign. Miguel Fiallos, IWA Language Chairperson-French will be overseeing language translation of IWA content for the Paris chapter's web site. This is an excellent example of how IWA Language Center is proving to be an invaluable asset in IWA's efforts to becoming truly global.

IWA Italy:
Howard Litzford, Luna-Park, and Marco Masciadri, Lemax, are joining their talents to bring IWA Italy to the world. Luna-Park and Lemax are Italy's leading web development companies. Regional objectives for IWA Italy is to raise the standard of the webmaster's art in Italy and to support the growing network of Internet professionals working in this region.

IWA Ireland:
Fergal Byrne, Adnet, Inc., has been appointed as IWA Ireland's regional chairperson. As Adnet's director of information design, Mr. Byrne has established Adnet as a recognized resource as a full internet services provider to corporate and business organizations throughout Ireland. IWA Ireland will initially focus on establishing concrete methods for developers/suppliers to ensure a base level of project management and answerability for their work.

Recruitment of Regional Board Members:

Recruiting is underway for regional chairpersons and their board members. Qualified IWA members may apply by sending a letter of interest including background, organizational experience, and proposed goals for region to Richard Brinegar at mailto:rbrinegar@irwa.org.

CHAPTER NEWS:

Application for New Chapters:

Due to the recent increase in numbers of applications received for new chapters, IWA's review and approval process will now be prioritized by the chapter proposals that represent larger metropolitan areas, or until more regions are established to handle the applications. International will continue to accept applications and will respond at the earliest possible time. All applications will be received at the international level and forwarded onto to respective regional review committees if established.

Primary Objectives of Chapters:

1. Develop and maintain a chapter Web site for the purpose of an effective communication medium between members, community, and businesses.

2. Promote the services of our members to businesses and employers.

3. Establish a local professional network of local Webmasters and Webmaster specialists for the purpose of exchanging information and ideas.

New Chapters Announced

Southern Nevada-Las Vegas Chapter
Gregory Jerome, IT Director,Ves International, Inc., and IWA chairperson has now released the chapter's objectives and Web site.

North Bay Chapter
Ariel Wada, CIO, Interactive Solutions, Inc., and IWA chairperson has developed, along with several active bay area members. This chapter originally grew out of the IWA Marin County chapter which believed an expanded chapter territory would improve effectiveness to increase membership and attract supporters.

Chapter Membership Policy Changed

IWA has recently changed its policy on chapter membership which is to have all IWA members join a local chapter based on their geographic region. IWA has chosen this structure to increase our influence with other regional groups, employers, sponsors, etc. Not too mention, the increase in opportunities for members to establish professional contacts.. Once a chapter is established in your region, all members will be approached to update their member profiles to include the chapter's proper URL.

New Technology Announcements.

Here are two important developments in the multilanguage field.

HTML 4.0 Draft Released by W3C:

Besides bringing greater capabilities to web designers and providing improved access to the disabled through increased speech and braille technology, HTML 4.0 validates the internationalization efforts of the IWA. Richard Tuttle, director of IWA Language Centre ("LC"), recognizes this advancement as big step in improving management of mulitlanguage pages and current technology of Web based language translation software. For further information about the internationalization of the Internet, read WebSite Translation, an article by the Richard Tuttle.

Multilanguage Chat Software by Uni-verse:

Here is the first real time multilanguage chat software. Uni-Verse currently provides multi-directional machine translation in six languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish with more languages on the way.

MEMBER PROFILES

IWA will be instituting a program which will profile selected members from our member database. Our goal is to encourage networking through the use of IWA's searchable member database and to broaden our knowledge by gaining new perspectives from other personal work experiences and methods. We plan to do more than two profiles as we did this time as we think it will be "easy fishing" since we have hundreds of professional members who are just a click away: http://www.irwa.org/advancedsearch.html

Craig Landwehr, Marketing Systems Leader of Owens Corning, was one of IWA's original members to join in January 1997. Writing this profile is going to be easy as WebMaster Magazine (TM) covered him and his webmaster team this month. The feature article is titled "So Many Ideas, So Little Site" http://www.cio.com/WebMaster/070197_priority.html . After reading this article you'll have a greater understanding of his Speciality as he provided in his member profile as being: Application and Leveraging of Information Technology to Achieve Business Goals and Strategy.

Bill Mclain, Webmaster@Xerox. Customer service at Xerox is top priority and when most companies are out sourcing this specialized service, Bill Mclain and a small staff of employees are delivering a quality service which is building goodwill with customers and a cost savings to Xerox. Here is his recipe for Web customer service:

1. Answer every message (even if it has nothing to do with Xerox). It's only courteous to do so.
2. Answer within 24 hours.
3. Provide an answer (don't give them a number to call; call the number yourself, get the answer, and send it to the customer.

Bill Mclain has probably been featured and interviewed more times than any other Webmaster. Here are two of his countless interviews:
Net Marketing Magazine, CNN Online:
